The Blend

This is the bottle for the day that ends with you still answering emails at nine at night. Ashwagandha and tulsi arrive from Ayurveda, magnolia bark and polygala-adjacent practice from East Asia, and skullcap, lemon balm and rhodiola from Europe and the north.

Kanna, from southern Africa, gives it a faintly lifted character; the taste is softly bitter and green. It is not a sedative and not a stimulant — it is the blend I think of as a long exhale.

Traditionally Associated With

These seven botanicals carry histories associated with nervous tension, everyday stress, irritability and stress-related fatigue in Ayurvedic, Chinese, European and southern African traditions. Traditional use is not the same as demonstrated effect, and this blend is not a treatment for anxiety or any other condition.

Traditional associations are recorded here as heritage, not as evidence of effect.

Botanical Wisdom

Kanna, carried across the Karoo

Sceletium tortuosum grows as a low succulent in the dry interior of South Africa, where Khoikhoi and San knowledge of it is centuries deep. The plant was traditionally fermented and dried, then shared between people rather than taken alone — a detail I like, because it says something about what the plant was for. It is also one of the few botanicals in this cabinet that arrived in the wider world only recently.

A Note from the Herbalist

“My test for a stress blend is whether I remember to take it. This one I remember, mostly because the taste is unusual enough to make me stop for a second — which is arguably the active ingredient.”
