The Blend
Vital Roots is a bottle of roots and fungi, built for weeks that are longer than they should be. Eleuthero and Panax ginseng bring the northern and Chinese traditions together, with maca from the high Andes, cistanche and cordyceps from the Tibetan plateau, astragalus for ballast, and suma from the Amazon.
It is earthy and slightly sweet, and it tastes like something dug up rather than mixed — which it is.

Eleuthero, maca, Panax ginseng, cistanche, cordyceps, astragalus and suma all carry histories associated with physical stamina, restoration, fatigue and everyday vitality. These are traditional associations; this blend is not a treatment for fatigue, and persistent exhaustion is worth investigating with a doctor.

Botanical Wisdom
Maca, at four thousand metres
Maca grows where almost nothing else will: the high puna of the Peruvian Andes, at altitudes that make most crops give up. It has been cultivated there for at least two thousand years and was traded down from the mountains long before it appeared in anybody's smoothie. The root is small, knobbly and stubborn, and the plants are rotated with potatoes for years at a time to let the ground recover — an agricultural patience that seems entirely in keeping with the plant.
