The Blend

Immune Reserve is a blend built for the week when the whole town starts clearing its throat. Seven plants from three continents meet in it: South African pelargonium and Indian andrographis, the Chinese trio of schisandra, astragalus and Isatis, and the prairie echinacea and elecampane that travelled with European settlers into North American practice.

It is a considered, old-fashioned sort of bottle — the kind kept beside the kettle from October onward rather than reached for in a panic. The taste is dark, rooty and a little bitter, with the sour fruit of schisandra coming through at the end.

Traditionally Associated With

Pelargonium, andrographis, echinacea, elecampane and Isatis all appear in their home traditions in preparations associated with coughs, sore throats, congestion and seasonal respiratory discomfort. Astragalus and schisandra were used more as steady daily companions than short-term measures. These are traditional associations, recorded and repeated across generations — not treatment claims, and not a substitute for medical care.

Botanical Wisdom

Isatis, the blue-rooted one

Isatis tinctoria is woad — the plant that dyed Europe blue for centuries before indigo arrived by ship. The same leaves that stained cloth were used in Chinese practice as ban lan gen, a root and leaf preparation associated with the first days of a sore throat. Few plants hold two entirely separate lives in two separate traditions, and this bottle carries the second of them.

A Note from the Herbalist

“I keep a bottle of this beside my own kettle, which is the honest reason it is No. 01. Every autumn there is a week when the whole town sounds like it is clearing its throat, and I would rather have this on the shelf before that week than be mixing it during it.”
