The Blend
Breathe Well is for the throat that has done a lot of talking. It draws on respiratory traditions from North America, Europe, Ayurveda and Chinese practice, and holds seven plants that have each been kept close for the same reason: the breath, and everything that gets in its way.
The blend is aromatic rather than sweet — thyme and wild cherry bark at the front, balloon flower and marshmallow root underneath, softening as it settles. It is the bottle people reach for after a long season of teaching, singing, or simply living in a house with a cough going through it.
Traditionally Associated With
Wild cherry bark, elecampane, vasaka, mullein, thyme and marshmallow root all carry historical associations with coughs, congestion, mucus and irritated throats in their respective traditions, while balloon flower root appears in Chinese practice in preparations for the throat and chest. These are records of traditional use and not claims about what this blend will do.

Botanical Wisdom
Mullein, the roadside torch
Verbascum thapsus is the tall, woolly plant that takes over gravel driveways and disturbed ground without being asked. The Romans dipped its dried stalks in tallow and burned them as torches, which is where the old name candelaria comes from; in later European practice, the soft leaf and flower were steeped for the chest and the throat. It is a plant of the edges of things, which is very often where the most useful herbs are found.
A Note from the Herbalist
“Mullein grows in every gravel driveway I have ever had, which feels like the plant quietly insisting on being useful. I like this blend best in the evening, once the day has finally stopped asking me to talk.”
