The Blend

His Monthly Tonic is the companion to Her Monthly Tonic, and it exists because the men I know would rather change the subject. It gathers botanicals from African, European, North American and Chinese traditions — African cherry bark and rye grass pollen extract, nettle root, saw palmetto, pumpkin seed, prepared rehmannia and tribulus.

It is dark, resinous and slightly sweet, with none of the bright aromatics of the other bottles. A steady, unshowy sort of blend, which is how I would describe the men I made it for.

Traditionally Associated With

These seven botanicals and extracts are associated in their home traditions with men's urinary comfort, prostate-related concerns and reproductive wellness. That is a record of traditional use, not a claim about what this blend does; urinary or prostate symptoms need a clinician's assessment, not a tincture.

Botanical Wisdom

Saw palmetto, the cabbage palm

Serenoa repens is a low, sprawling palm that once covered great stretches of the southeastern United States, and its berries were food and medicine for Seminole communities long before they were a supplement aisle staple. The plant grows so slowly that some stands are reckoned to be centuries old, creeping outward a few centimetres a year. It is a good reminder that the plants we treat casually have usually been here far longer than the argument about them.

A Note from the Herbalist

“The men in my family do not discuss their health, so this bottle is a conversation I started on their behalf. Saw palmetto and nettle root do the work; the label does the talking.”
