The Blend

Her Monthly Tonic gathers botanicals that women's traditions have kept close for a very long time: white peony and dong quai from Chinese practice, shatavari from Ayurveda, vitex and cramp bark from European and North American use, with ginger and saffron for warmth and colour.

It is deep, slightly sweet and gently spiced — saffron is the note that lingers. I think of it as something to take in the days when the month is asking for more room, rather than as a remedy for the month itself.

Traditionally Associated With

These botanicals are historically associated with menstrual discomfort, cyclical changes, cramps, bloating and premenstrual experiences in their respective traditions. That heritage is offered here as knowledge, not as a treatment claim; new or severe menstrual pain, or a change in your cycle, should be discussed with a doctor.

Botanical Wisdom

Saffron, picked by hand

Saffron is the stigma of a crocus, and it takes roughly a hundred and fifty thousand flowers to make a single kilogram — every one of them picked before dawn, because heat spoils the thread. It has been worth more than its weight in gold for three thousand years, used for dye, perfume, ceremony and medicine across Persia, Kashmir and Spain. A small amount goes a long way, which is true of most things worth having.

A Note from the Herbalist

“I have never met anyone whose month is convenient. This is not here to fix yours — it is here to make the edges of it a little softer, and to remind you that resting on the days that hurt is allowed.”
